Top restaurants for Mediterranean cuisine

Mono restaurant

In the heart of the city, on Mitropoleos Street, at the quiet picturesque alley, Benizelou Palaiologou Street, we find the wine restaurant Mono proposing an atmospheric space with frugal decoration, minimal aesthetics, an exceptional patio at the back and tables on the paved street, which weather permitting, are much desired! At the Mono wine restaurant, we enjoy dishes of fine quality and flavor, choosing from an inspired seasonal menu of intense aromas and elegant presentation focused on fish. Owner and executive chef, Vasilis Vasileiou has created an inspired card based on the Mediterranean and the Greek cuisine, on their products and culture resulting in "altered" recipes which continue to become evolved, always using ingredients from various parts of Greece. Certainly, you will have a difficult time choosing one out of the many great options from its menu, while equally delicious are also its desserts. With a great specialization on wine, it offers a selection of 250 labels from the Greek vineyard many of which are served by the glass using dispensers for the perfect preservation. Daily 13:00 -01:00.

Must taste

From its new summer menu you must definitely taste the signature risotto with

watermelon, feta cheese and pine nuts.

Highlight

Of course, the location!

M8

8 Milioni Str., Kolonaki, Athens, Τ. 210 3643388, www.m8-athens.com

If last year it managed to make an impressive first appearance, this year it has established its place in the gold list of the most popular hangouts in the city and, in fact, in one of the most privileged walkways. The M8 preserves its all day philosophy, set on the background of a renovated and very elegant space with island atmosphere, greatly upgraded by blue tones and modern luxurious decoration. Seated inside or outside, with a view of the people’s stroll, in the morning we get to wake up with aromatic coffees and 3 healthy breakfast options (at the fair price of €7), the fitness, the traditional and the classic, which deliciously satisfy our nutritional needs while boosting uswith energy. In the afternoon, the delight turns over to a creative Mediterranean cuisine by the talented chef Akis Klonaris. Must taste, the fresh salmon teriyaki, the quinoa salad with passion fruit and the divine banoffee or the lime pie. The bar is set exceptionally high with the wine list consisting of wine from the Greek, the Spanish and the German vineyard. As time passes by, music and people alternate, the lighting gets dimmed down and the atmosphere becomes ideal for an after office signature cocktail from the brand new list or a beer (here you will find German beers hard to findelsewhere), accompanied by irresistible platters of German sausages, seafood, cold cuts and cheese.

Highlights

• The thematic menu (consisting of an appetizer, a main dish, a dessert and a drink), different every month.

• The privileged location which, despite being in the heart of Kolonaki, is also ideal for more quiet gatherings.

• The parties and the themed nights, hosted from time to time.

Belle Amie

11 Aggelou Metaxa Str. & Voulgari Str., Kanari Sq., Piraeus, T. 210 4175740, belleamiegr

By Christos Aivaliotis, Photos: Maria Chatziioanidou

Reference point of the all-day fun section of the town for the past 4 years. Especially this year, when the refreshing breeze of renovation has blown under the roof of its neoclassical building dating back to 1875 in the walkway of Aggelou Metaxa Street (in walking distance from the Piraeus Marina). Its motto “The Essence Bar Restaurant” reveals a lot but only upon entering in its premises we realize the high end dimension it promises to give our moments. The retro-maximalist design (by Alex Petrakis and Vivian Dimitrakopoulou under the directions of interior designer Kosmas Karavas) takes us on a journey through the Parisian bistro and the Berlin cabarets of the interwar period. Marble columns, antiques, golden details, dark green walls, hidden separated sections on the 2nd floor surrounded by heavy frames depicting important personalities, compose a mystique setting which further upgrades its promising delicacies... A characteristic example, apart from the breakfasts and the special beverages, is its updated menu of creative Mediterranean-Greek cuisine by chef Christos Tzieras. In the evenings, we return here to rush for a seat around the 2 emblematic bars with their large collection of premium drinks, wines and cocktails, relaxing under the sounds of atmospheric music. Daily 09:00-03:00 (the kitchen 12:00-00:30).

The garden, one of the most beautiful in Piraeus, with a bar and a bourgeois bon-vivant atmosphere.

To Elliniko ouzomezedopolio

28 Lazaraki Str., Glyfada, T. 210 8941471

By Katerina Fotopoulou. Photos: Eleanna Kourkoulopoulou

To Elliniko is a new age tavern in Glyfada, which began its successful course in Thessaloniki (we find it at the city center, close to the White Tower) and came to Athens to introduce us to its tasty flavors and concept. Due to its philosophy, its friendly atmosphere and, of course, its menu it soon became a hangout. Clearly oriented towards a variety of recipes originating from various parts of Greece, prepared with love and care from fresh local ingredients, Elliniko serves high quality, delicious Greek handmade meze and excellent, well cooked dishes. At its neat space, reminiscent of an old grocery with lots of items at its shelves which could be found in previous decades, and with a warm atmosphere, it is amongst the top choices for traditional Greek cuisine, good company and fine tsipouro, ouzo or wine, in large variety, while we also enjoy its beautiful exterior space perfect for sunny days! Daily 12:00-01:00 (the kitchen).

Must taste

• The Greek wine from Limnos and the selected tsipouro from Makedonia.

• The white tarama, the salted and cured roe of the cod, and the spicy cheese spread with Florina

pepper.

• The seafood orzotto.

• The “tigania agiorgitiki” fried trilogy of meats with pork, chicken and village sausage cooked in a light mustard sauce
